Ian Rayworth - RIP - Funeral details

Posted 25th October 2024

Sad news. Ian Rayworth passed away last Friday (18/10) . Ian played 682 appearances for the football club scoring a magnificent 10 goals. He was a central defender and guided me in my early days in that position . He was also Football club President .

The first time i met Ian was when he picked me up outside the old school & we were playing in north london . It was my first game for the old boys . I got dropped off , had his car pointed out . Knocked on the window and beckoned in . He said not a word on the whole journey up to north london .Serial killer crossed my mind . To be sacrificed at such a young age!  played the game had a couple of pints - he never shut up ! we got on famously from then .

He introduced Freddie Brindle to the club some years later & they become a double act looking after the younger players as they moved up the sides. The game was hard fort , but fair . There were a number of laughs on field and in the bar . I remember one day playing in the freezing cold at Hayes . I was soooo cold my hands were blue & i thought i had frost bite in my private parts . Had a hot shower , hands were ok , appendage -no feeling . I seriously thought that was it . Luckily Rayworth & Brindle clubbed together and got me a large brandy . got the team to surround me as i dropped my appendage into the brandy . it did the trick ! much to their delight & they happily regaled the story for many a season .

Ian taught me all that was good about the Old Wilsonians & was a mentor in my early days & great company in my latter days . I will miss him . Thoughts out to Maureen & the rest of Rayworth clan .

There will be a minutes silence in all senior games this weekend & the club flag will be a half mast in honour of Ian.

Ian's funeral will take place at Tunbridge Wells (Kent & Sussex) Cremotorium on 13th November at 1.45pm - address is Benhall Mill Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN2 5JJ
